SPECIAL EDUCATION DIRECTOR

REPORTS TO: Superintendent
SUPERVISES: Special education faculty, staff and contracted personnel
JOB GOAL: To ensure that Special Education students receive the services they need, as well as comply with state laws and regulations.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties of this position include but are not limited to:
Supervises and evaluates Special Education faculty and staff.
Supervises and serves as a resource in the development of special
education instructional programs.
Prepares and administers the Special Education budget.
Prepares or supervises the preparation of reports, records, lists and all other
paperwork required or appropriate for Special Education.
Assists in the in—service orientation and training of faculty and staff regarding
Special Education laws, procedures and issues.
Serves as a member and attends such committees as directed by the
Superintendent.
Works in conjunction with the principal for the hiring of Special Education
faculty and staff.
Works in conjunction with the principal to organize kindergarten screening.
Chairs PET meetings, or when necessary designates a qualified faculty member to serve in the capacity.
Assists in student evaluations and observations as needed.
Participates in secondary level PET meetings when appropriate.
Participates in out—of-district PET meetings when necessary and formally
observes SPED students in out—of—district placements when geographically
possible at least once per year.
Arranges alternative transportation for Special Education students, when
appropriate.
Liaison to secondary special education departments and preschools.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary, benefits and work year to be determined by the School Committee
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the School Committee’s policy on Evaluation of Administrators.
