SPECIAL EDUCATION DIRECTOR

REPORTS TO: Superintendent

SUPERVISES: Special education faculty, staff and contracted personnel

JOB GOAL:  To ensure that Special Education students receive the services they need, as well as comply with state laws and regulations.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties of this position include but are not limited to:


  • Supervises and evaluates Special Education faculty and staff. 

  • Supervises and serves as a resource in the development of special

            education instructional programs. 

  • Prepares and administers the Special Education budget.

  • Prepares or supervises the preparation of reports, records, lists and all other

            paperwork required or appropriate for Special Education.

  • Assists in the in—service orientation and training of faculty and staff regarding

Special Education laws, procedures and issues.

  • Serves as a member and attends such committees as directed by the

Superintendent.


  • Works in conjunction with the principal for the hiring of Special Education

faculty and staff.


  • Works in conjunction with the principal to organize kindergarten screening.


  • Chairs PET meetings, or when necessary designates a qualified faculty member to serve in the capacity.


  • Assists in student evaluations and observations as needed.


  • Participates in secondary level PET meetings when appropriate.


  • Participates in out—of-district PET meetings when necessary and formally

          observes SPED students in out—of—district placements when geographically

          possible at least once per year.


  • Arranges alternative transportation for Special Education students, when

appropriate.


  • Liaison to secondary special education departments and preschools. 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Salary, benefits and work year to be determined by the School Committee

EVALUATION:  Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the School Committee’s policy on Evaluation of Administrators.

  • Demonstrates a respect for the legal and human rights of students, staff and parents

  • Follows health and safety procedures established by the district

  • Arrives and departs punctually, notifying appropriate personnel about absences and coverage.

  • Demonstrates loyalty, dependability, integrity, and other ethical standards
